Windows 7 and 8.1 are also entitled to the Edge browser based on Chromium

Windows 7 et 8.1 ont également droit au navigateur Edge basé sur Chromium Cybersecurity

Microsoft extended the Windows Update deployment of Chromium-based Edge from Windows 10 to Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, despite the end of support for the latter.

The company started offering its new version of Edge to Windows 10 users in June, shortly after the depreciation of the “classic” Edge browser on Windows 10. Unlike the old version of Edge, Chromium-based Edge is not exclusive to Windows 10 and works on MacOS, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. But there is no support for Linux or Chromebooks.

“This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update,” said Microsoft in a new support document.

The new Microsoft Edge will not replace Internet Explorer on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines, but it will replace the classic version of Edge.

“The new Microsoft Edge will be pinned to the taskbar and add a desktop shortcut. If your current version of Microsoft Edge already has a shortcut, it will be replaced, “said Microsoft.

For Google Chrome and Firefox users, Microsoft says the update will also not change the browser’s default settings.

Of course, Windows 7 no longer benefits from free security updates since January 14, but Google has committed to providing Chrome support for Windows 7 until July 2021, at least.

Microsoft says it will provide Edge support on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 until July 15, 2021.

Microsoft does not provide its new Edge update for Enterprise versions.

“Specifically, this update targets devices that run Windows 7 SP1 or later, and Windows 8.1 or later that are Home, Professional, Ultimate, Starter, or Core editions,” said the company.

“Devices that run these editions on the Active Directory or Azure Active Directory domain are also excluded from this automatic update. »/ P>

There are no prerequisites for installing the update on Windows 8.1, but Windows 7 devices require you to have installed KB4474419, an update available from September 23, 2019, and the update KB4490628 maintenance stack day of March 12, 2019, or later.
