India bans 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok and WeChat Cybersecurity

The Indian government has today banned 59 Chinese mobile apps for national security reasons, according to a government mandate seen by ZDNet.

This ban follows the confrontation between the Indian army and the Chinese forces in the Ladakh region, in the north of India, on June 15. The clashes have left at least 20 dead among Indian soldiers, and more than 75 injured.

Data gathering

The New Delhi government claims that the 59 apps are used to collect data on Indian users and then send to servers in China.

Indian officials say they believe the data is exploited and used to profile Indian users by “elements hostile to national security and the defense of India”.

The Indian Ministry of Information Technology, which authorized the ban today, said it had received a “comprehensive recommendation” to ban the 59 Chinese applications from the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center at the Ministry of inside.

The ministry adds that India’s computer emergency response team (CERT-IN) has also received complaints from users regarding the privacy and security of banned applications.

Technical application of the ban

It is not yet clear how the Indian government will proceed with the technical ban. The apps are still available at the app stores, and they still work inside the country, as of this writing.

It is unclear whether the New Delhi government will ask app stores to remove apps from their Indian stores, or whether the government will use local internet service providers to block app domains.

National application bans are generally very difficult to enforce. Russia recently ” [officiellement] unlocked the Telegram app “after a two-year ban, although the app has never stopped working inside the country, the Telegram team is still finding new ways to get around the Kremlin ban at level of internet service providers.
